Marc Sabbah (1988, New York City) is a viola soloist, chamber musician, and as of 2012 is the co-principal violist of the National Orchestra of Belgium. He is regularly invited as a guest principal viola with other orchestras. As of September 2017, Marc is a guest professor of viola at the Royal Conservatory of Mons, Belgium.
At heart, Marc is a performer, the viola is merely his tool for communication. Marc completed his studies in the US as a graduate of the LaGuardia High school of Performing Arts and the Pre-College Division of The Juilliard School. After that he graduated Cum Laude from the Conservatorium of Amsterdam as a pupil of Sven Arne Tepl and Nobuko Imai.
Marc is a first prize-winner of various international competitions, f.i. at the 2016 Rising Stars Grand Prix Music Competition, resulting in a solo appearance on stage at the Berlin Philharmonic Hall. He is also the 1st Grand Prize winner of the Manhattan International Music Competition in Carnegie Hall,; winning this competition gave him a solo recital at renowned Weill Hall. Other top prizes Marc received were, among others, the Moscow Arts Competition in Boston, the Horowitz International Competition & Academy in Kiev and the 1st prize at the National Amsterdam Viola Competition (2013). Marc has given solo recitals and chamber music performances in The Netherlands and Belgium and has performed at festivals throughout Europe, Israel, Ukraine, Russia, the United States and Canada. In 2011, he performed with Ivry Gitlis at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland where he also collaborated with artists like Gabor Takács-Nagy, Lawrence Power and Kim Kashkashian.
He toured with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra (Nederlands Kamer Orkest) with violinist Gordan Nikolic playing concerts at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and a recent 2017-tour in Finland. In The Netherlands he participated in the Delft Chamber Music Festival (Liza Ferschtman, Grachtenfestival and the Utrecht Chamber Music Festival (Janine Jansen). He is the founder of a new chamber music series in the heart of Brussels. In November 2018 Marc will be giving a masterclass and performance on the solo viola suites by Max Reger at the 2018 International Viola Congress in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
As an active soloist, Marc has recently performed the Leo Smit viola concerto, the Walton Viola Concerto as well as the Max Bruch Double Concerto with the Casco Philharmonic and with the National Orchestra of Belgium. June 2018 he will be performing the Concerto for viola and orchestra by Franz Anton Hoffmeister, with Camerata Rousseau in Switzerland.
Marc also is an active chamber musician: he regularly performs with Belgian pianist Eliane Reyes; they bring a rich palette of sounds, passion, musical maturity and poetic sensitivity to their audiences.
