Dimitris Tiliakos, Vassilis Varvaresos

Recensies CD:
”… Tiliakos’ secure, focused tone, clear diction and idiomatic phrasing are convincing qualities…” from: Musicweb

“…This performance by Tiliakos and Varvaresos is a compelling work of art all on its own, a vision of humanity shared by three artists – Schubert, Tiliakos and Varvaresos -courageous enough to look beyond the façades of pretty fusions of music and text….” from: Voix des Arts

Who hasn’t heard of Schubert’s Winterreise, one of the masterpieces in the history of music, and an absolute milestone in the development of the German lied. 30-year-old Schubert completed this cycle of songs a year before his death, in 1827. They touched and moved him highly. This still is the case with the audience, some 200 years later. Could that be because the loneliness that resounds in these songs, is universal?

Winterreise consists of 24 songs and is based on dark and melancholic poems by Wilhelm Müller, a poet whose words Schubert used before in f.i. Die schöne Müllerin. A rejected young man leaves the house of his beloved in the night, leaves the civilized world behind and wanders through a winter landscape, a metaphor for the desperation of the wandering soul.

Baritone Dimitris Tilkiakos and pianist Vassilis Varvaresos are able to transmit the feeling and emotion of Winterreise in a unique and gripping way to the audience. A CD of Winterreise will be recorded summer of 2015.

Baritone Dimitris Tiliakos was born in Rhodes and after studying the viola, began his vocal training in Athens. Winning the “Maria Callas Scholarship” allowed him to continue his studies in Opera and Lied in München where he was awarded with the music degree “Meisterklassendiplom” for outstanding artistic performance. He is a big shot in the opera world, having performed in all the big opera houses such as Paris, London, New York, Barcelona,  Amsterdam and Brussels and having sung title roles in operas as Rigoletto, Macbeth and Nabucco, but also in operas from earlier times, like those from Purcell.
His recital tour of Schubert’s Winterreise, together with Greek pianist Vassilis Varvaresos, is fulfilling a childhood dream for him as ‘Lied’ is a discipline which is very close to his heart.

Born in Greece, pianist Vassilis Varvaresos was a winner of many international competitions, his most recent one in September 2014, being the 3rd Prize at the prestigious Enescu Competition in Bucharest. Major appearances include recitals at the biggest venues in New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington. As a soloist this ‘Most Promising Young Greek Artist’ made his New York début in 2007 at Lincoln Center and performed with various orchestras in US, Asia and Europe. In chamber music, Vassilis is a much sought-after partner, and, among others, performs on a regular basis with violinist Noé Inui in Benelux, Germany, Greece, US and Japan.
